Bridgwater to Okehampton

Thursday 4th June 2009

After five days where we've cycled c. 100 miles per day, today was a bit of a bonus - only 63 miles!

The riders gathered at 8.00 at Somerset View Caravan Park in North Petherton.  We had fifteen stage riders joining us with good representation from Sean Duffy's  T&T Team and The Devon and Cornwall Team (including someone dressed as the Tazmanian Devil !!).

We hadn't got lost for a few days, so we took the opportunity to mess things up early on today, by taking a totally unnecessary diversion around Taunton.  With that box ticked, we carried on down the A38 towards Tiverton and stopped for an early lunch at Bickleigh.

Paul James came into his own today - without doubt the best support act since David Jew won 'World's Best JOGLE Support' last week, at the World Support Awards.  As you expect of Paul, he carries out his duties to the highest level.  Let me give you an example - just before lunch today, my left contact lens fell out.  I was resigned to cycling the second half of the day with one eye, when I casually said to Paul "Have you got any spare contact lenses?" - He'd only got some and they were exactly my prescription.  He also gave Tets some cream for a nasty little rash that he's got!!

The second half of the day was hilly - but nothing compared to what we'd already seen.  We finished in Okehampton at 1.30 - our earliest finish ever.  We have actually got some spare time today, which is probably a good thing, as the WAGs have just returned!!

Pub tonight, but best of all, I've been able to do this entry and upload 21 photos (see 'Day 10' on photos tab) early for a change!!

More hills tomorrow.

Mark

PS - Tets hasn't stopped talking about the fact that Jason said to him today "Awesome turning Tets!"

My family & I wish you continued happy cycling for the final stage.
We have been following your exploits, the ups & downs, the pizzas & the punctures, (& the suntan marks) with interest & unfailing admiration.
Take care & thank you, Gilly & family.

You should all be very proud of what you have achieved. Hopefully the last day will be dry and Sid will be fit enough to ride.
